A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying these treatments need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the medication report a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
