A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
